Stellantis, the multinational automaker, has recently announced its decision to close and sell its large vehicle proving grounds in Arizona by the end of this year. The move is part of the company’s ongoing efforts to cut costs and optimize its operations under the leadership of CEO Carlos Tavares.
The Arizona Proving Grounds, spanning 4,000 acres between Phoenix and Las Vegas, has served as a key location for vehicle testing and development since it was acquired by then-Chrysler in 2007. The decision to close this facility comes in light of the company’s financial performance challenges, layoffs, and strategic business decisions.
The closure of the Arizona Proving Grounds was confirmed by sources familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. Stellantis plans to utilize a proving grounds facility owned by Toyota Motor in Arizona starting next year, as part of its cost-cutting and real estate optimization efforts.
In response to the closure, Stellantis expressed its commitment to working with the United Auto Workers (UAW) union to provide special packages for employees affected by the decision. The company stated that employees could opt for a transfer of operations or be placed on indefinite layoff, ensuring pay and benefits for up to two years.
Stellantis, like other automakers, maintains multiple proving grounds across different locations to facilitate vehicle development and testing. The company’s main U.S. proving grounds facility is situated in Chelsea, Michigan, while the Arizona complex was one of 18 facilities identified for potential closure during contract negotiations with the UAW.
Over the years, Stellantis has significantly reduced its U.S. workforce as part of its cost-cutting initiatives. The company saw a 15.5% reduction in employee headcount between December 2019 and the end of 2023, with a particular focus on outsourcing engineering efforts to lower-cost countries like Brazil, India, and Mexico.
