You could have taken more than 2,700 baths using the water collected from just one acre of land in Newport after Sunday’s record rainfall, in theory of course.

Records, some more than a century old, were shattered in the region after a strong system wreaked havoc in some areas, causing landslides and road closures throughout the state. The National Weather Service in Portland released rainfall amounts for northwest areas of the state and southwest Washington.

Sunday marked the wettest Feb. 5 in Newport after 4.44 inches dropped. That shatters the previous 119-year-old record of 2.4 inches set in 1898. Sunday also broke the single-day record for the month. That was Feb. 8, 1899 after 4 inches fell.

According to a rainfall calculator on the U.S. Geological Survey’s website, 4 inches of rain on an acre of land produces 108,616 gallons of water. That equals to about 2,715 baths, assuming 40-gallon tubs.

At the Portland International Airport, the rain broke a 71-year-old record for Feb. 5 with 2.19 inches. The previous same-day record was set in 1946 after 1.54 inches of rain fell. Sunday was also the wettest February day since 1941 (the year officials started recording amounts at PDX). The previous record 2.16 inches was set in Feb. 6, 1996.

Downtown rainfall also broke decades-long records with 2.49 inches. Breaking the 2.1-inch record set in 1940. Sunday was the fourth wettest day ever in downtown since 1872.
