ST. PETERSBURG — Police closed off a small part of Tyrone Square mall after security guards there reported suspicious devices Friday evening, that turned out to be three sections of underground power cable.
Police said the cables had end caps that were taped and resembled pipe bombs. The cables were in front of a Victoria’s Secret store in the mall around 6:30 p.m. after three teens who were playing with them placed them there when they were approached by security guards, police said.
Security guards reported the cables outside the food court entrance on the southern side of the mall and officers roped off a small area near the entrance, including the Victoria’s Secret store, in an abundance of caution. The rest of the mall remained open.
The Tampa police Bomb Squad was summoned to the mall, at 6901 22nd Ave. N, to help investigate.
Police said there was no criminal intent or wrongdoing by the teens.
