A 13-year-old girl was killed in a crash in Hammond, Ind., on Wednesday when a car being chased by police hit the car she was riding in, authorities said.
East Chicago police started pursuing a Dodge Durango at some point Wednesday afternoon, according to Indiana State Police. Hammond Police joined the chase when the Durango entered Hammond, state police said.
About 5 p.m., the Durango being pursued hit a car at the intersection of Gostlin Street and Columbia Avenue. Julianna Chambers, 13, and her grandmother, 57, were both injured. Chambers was pronounced dead, authorities said. Her grandmother was taken in critical condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
Information was not immediately available about why police were pursuing.
The driver of the Durango was taken into custody and charges are pending, authorities said.
