The large Spanish banks –Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank, Bankinter, Banco Sabadell and Unicaja Banco– have registered aggregate profits of 12,385 million euros in the first half of this year, which represents 20.7% more than to the same period of 2022, according to figures compiled by Europa Press.
These gains have been boosted by the rise in interest rates applied by the central banks, especially the European Central Bank, in the last year, which has led to a trigger, in most cases, the interest margins of the entities.
If the international business of Santander, BBVA and Sabadell is subtracted from the global profit figure, the profit stands at 5,293 million euros, almost 50% more in the first half of 2022.
By entities, Banco Santander obtained an attributable profit of 5,241 million euros in the first half of 2023, 7% more in constant and current euros than in the same period of the previous year, as reported this Wednesday.
The entity explains that this result is based on the “strong growth” of revenues, especially in Europe, which neutralized the year-on-year increase in provisions in North and South America.
In addition, in this case, the Spanish market has once again been the engine of the Santander Group’s profits, registering a net profit of 1,132 million euros, 73.6% more than between January and June 2022. Thus, it is It has placed it ahead of other markets, such as the United States or Brazil, which in recent years had been the main geographies for the entity if profits are taken into account.
For its part, BBVA closed the first half of 2023 with a net attributable profit of 3,878 million euros, which represents an increase of 31% compared to the profits of the same period of the previous year. In Spain, profits of 1,231 million euros have been recorded, 53.68% more.
CaixaBank closed the first semester with a profit of 2,137 million euros, 35.8% more than in the same period of 2022, “due to the excellent commercial evolution”, with an increase of 31.3% in ‘core’ income , up to 7,110 million euros.
On the other hand, Banco Sabadell closed the first half of the year with a profit of 564 million euros, 43.6% more than in the same period of 2022. The British subsidiary of the entity, TBS, has contributed to the result with a profit of 106 million euros.
Likewise, Bankinter registered a net profit of 417.9 million euros in the first half of the year as a whole, which is equivalent to an increase of 54% compared to the same period in 2022.
Lastly, Unicaja Banco closed the first half of 2023 with an attributable net profit of 148 million euros, which represents a 13% decrease compared to the profits recorded in the same period of the previous year.
