The number of passengers on High Speed ​​in Spain shot up 34.5% last May, to 2.8 million, according to data from the Travel Transport statistics published on Tuesday by the National Institute of Statistics ( INE), which also highlights a 51.7% increase in the number of passengers on medium-distance railways, with more than 4 million passengers.

More than 467.9 million passengers used public transport in Spain last May, 16.6% more than in the same month of 2022. Urban transport increased by 19.9% ​​in the annual rate and interurban 16.6% did. Within the interurban, the 17.9% increase in rail transport stands out.

The variation rate of the number of public transport passengers in Spain in the month of May compared to April was 13%, according to data from the statistical institute.

URBAN TRANSPORT GROWS ALMOST 20%

Urban transport was used by more than 284.2 million passengers in May, 19.9% ​​more than in the same month in 2022. Metro transport increased by 19% in the annual rate. The Málaga metro presented the greatest increase, of 106.9%, while that of Seville was the only one that decreased, 4.0%.

Among the cities that have a metro, the greatest increase in bus transport was registered in Palma (44.0%) and the least in Seville (7.0%).

Urban bus transport grew by 20.6% in May compared to the same month in 2022. All the autonomous communities presented positive annual rates in bus transport. The greatest increases occurred in the Canary Islands (42.8%), Castilla y León (28.5%) and Extremadura and Castilla – La Mancha (28.4% in both).

In turn, Catalonia (11.9%) and Comunidad de Madrid, Andalucía and Aragón (18.5% all three) registered the smallest increases in bus transport.

Regarding interurban transport, more than 130.4 million passengers used interurban transport in May, which represented an increase of 16.6% compared to the same month in 2022.

By type of transport, rail grew 17.9%, bus 15.8%, air 13.5% and maritime 8.9%. Cercanías increased 12.5% ​​in bus transport and 15.4% in rail transport. The medium distance grew by 24.3% in bus transport and 51.7% in rail.

Lastly, long distance increased by 24.6% in bus transport and 24% in rail. Within the latter, Alta Velocidad grew by 34.5%

SPECIAL AND DISCRETIONAL TRANSPORTATION

More than 53.2 million users used special and discretionary transport in May, which represented an increase of 1.9% in the annual rate.

The number of special transport passengers fell by 4.2% and exceeds 33 million users. Within this, school fees fell by 3.1% and labor fees by 8.3%.

For its part, discretionary transport rose 13.6% compared to the same month in 2022, with more than 20.1 million passengers.
