Tiger Woods has pulled out of next week’s PGA Tour Genesis Open at Riviera Country Club, citing ongoing back spasms, according to his website.
He is also not going to play at the Honda Classic the following week in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
“My doctors have advised me not to play the next two weeks, to continue my treatment and to let my back calm down,” Woods said.
“This is not what I was hoping for or expecting. I am extremely disappointed to miss the Genesis Open, a tournament that benefits my foundation, and The Honda Classic, my hometown event. I would like to thank Genesis for their support, and I know we will have an outstanding week.”
The 14-time major champion plans to be at Riviera Country Club earlier in the week to support the event, the proceeds of which benefits his Learning Center in Anaheim.
Woods’ post says any playing beyond March will be determined “at a later date after his back is reassessed.” He has been targeting an appearance at the Masters from April 6-9, an event he has won four times but not in the past 12 years.
The 41-year-old, who has fallen to a No. 674 world ranking, committed months ago to playing the Genesis Open, but his recent comeback attempts from back surgery have led to him missing the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines on Jan. 28, then flying to Dubai and pulling out of that event Feb. 3 because of back spasms after one round.
