Hiring falls 29.5%, but permanent contracts double and account for 43.2% of the total

The number of unemployed registered in the offices of the public employment services (formerly Inem) fell by 33,512 in November in relation to the previous month (-1.1%), its second largest decline this month in the historical series after the one experienced in 2021 (-74,381 unemployed).
After this fall, driven mainly by the service sector, the total number of unemployed stood at 2,881,380 at the end of November, its lowest figure in a month of November since 2007, according to data published this Friday by the Ministry of Labor and Economy. Social.
November is a month in which unemployment tends to rise. Since the beginning of the comparable historical series in 1996, unemployment has increased in 21 months of November and has fallen in six. This year’s has been the second most pronounced decline after that of 2021, a year marked by the pandemic.
In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment fell by 61,595 people in November.
In the last year, unemployment has accumulated a decrease of 301,307 unemployed, which is 9.5% less, with a drop in female unemployment of 160,698 women (-8.5%) and a drop in male unemployment of 140,609 men (- 10.8%).
Unemployment fell in November in all economic sectors, except in the group without previous employment, where it increased by 1,785 people (0.7%). The greatest decrease was recorded by services, with 25,083 fewer unemployed (-1.2%), followed by agriculture, which lost 4,507 unemployed (-3.7%), and industry, where unemployment fell by 3,783 people (-1.6%). Unemployment in construction also fell, although to a lesser extent (-1,924 unemployed, -0.8%).
Unemployment fell in November for both sexes, although somewhat more among women. Specifically, female unemployment fell by 19,199 women (-1.1%) and male unemployment fell by 14,313 men (-1.2%).
Thus, at the end of the penultimate month of the year, the number of unemployed women stood at 1,727,559, its best figure in a month of November since 2008, while the number of unemployed men totaled 1,153,821 unemployed.
By age, unemployment among young people under 25 years of age decreased by 2% in November, with 4,182 fewer unemployed than at the end of October, while unemployment among people aged 25 and over fell by 29,330 unemployed (-1.1 %).
After the setback in November, the total number of unemployed under 25 years of age stood at 207,936, its lowest figure in a month of November in the historical series.
Registered unemployment rose in November in nine autonomous communities, especially in the Balearic Islands (1,587 unemployed), Castilla y León (1,554 unemployed) and Catalonia (986 unemployed), and fell in eight regions, especially in the Valencian Community (-15,330 unemployed). Andalusia (-11,169) and Madrid (-7,757).
As for the provinces, unemployment fell in 26 of them, led by Valencia (-8,260 unemployed), Madrid (-7,757 unemployed) and Alicante (-4,757), and increased in 26, mainly in the Balearic Islands (1,587 unemployed), Tarragona (793 unemployed) and Malaga (710).
Registered unemployment among foreigners rose by 2,227 unemployed compared to the previous month (0.6%), until the total number of unemployed immigrants stood at 363,225, which means 47,381 fewer unemployed than a year earlier (-11.5%).
In November, 1,424,283 contracts were registered, 29.5% less than in the same month of 2021. Of all of them, 615,236 were permanent contracts, a figure that more than doubles (117.4%) that of November 2021.
In total, 43.2% of the contracts carried out in November were permanent, a percentage that has fallen slightly compared to the previous month, when the proportion of permanent contracts was 45.7%.
Of the total number of permanent contracts signed in November, 252,714 were full-time, 43.7% more than in the same month last year; 212,947 were permanent-discontinuous contracts, multiplying by more than six the figure for November 2021 (525.9%), and 149,575 were permanent part-time contracts, double the number a year earlier (104.5%).
Of all the contracts signed in November, 809,047 were temporary contracts, 53.4% less than in the same month of 2021.
In the first eleven months of 2022, more than 6.5 million permanent contracts have been carried out, more than double that of the same period in 2021, thanks to the promotion of the labor reform, in force since the beginning of this year. Temporary hiring has fallen in this period by 33%.
“Employment stability is consolidated in all sectors,” highlighted the Department headed by Yolanda Díaz. Thus, the percentages of permanent contracts out of the total reached 73.7% in construction in November, 54.4% in agriculture and 41.9% among those under 30 years of age, compared to the average of 10.8 %, 2.9% and 9.1% in the 2017-2019 period, respectively.
The Ministry has also reported that spending on unemployment benefits reached 1,697.8 million euros in October (latest data available).
The total number of beneficiaries of unemployment benefits at the end of October stood at 1,735,379 people.
