Indefinite contracts fell by 17.4% in the last year and accounted for 39.5% of the total, while temporary contracts fell by 10.7%

The number of unemployed registered in the offices of the public employment services fell by 10,968 people in July in relation to the previous month (-0.41%), chaining five months of consecutive decreases, according to data published this Wednesday by the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy.

The total number of unemployed continues below 2.7 million and, specifically, in July it stood at 2,677,874 people, its lowest figure since September 2008.

The drop in unemployment in July of this year contrasts with the rise registered in July 2022, when unemployment rose by 3,230 people. It does not exceed, however, the sharp decline registered in July 2021, when the return to normality after the pandemic led to a drop in unemployment of 197,841 people, the largest monthly decline ever recorded.

With the data for July (-10,968), unemployment chains five months of declines, after the falls registered in March (-48,755), April (-73,890), May (-49,260) and June (-50,268).

From the Department directed by Yolanda Díaz they have pointed out that in year-on-year terms, registered unemployment has fallen by 205,938 people (-7.14%). “This percentage decrease reflects a very intense drop given the stable conditions in which our labor market moves, in which the effects of the labor reform are consolidated,” they have highlighted from Trabajo.

In seasonally adjusted terms, registered unemployment rose by 5,509 people in the seventh month of the year.

By economic sector compared to June, registered unemployment decreased in the Services sector 7,126 (-0.37%), Agriculture 1,861 (-1.74%) and Industry 964 (-0.45%), while it increased in Construction 1,186 (0.57%). The group without previous employment decreased by 2,203 (-0.89%).

By gender, male unemployment stood at 1,059,390 people in July, falling by 5,135 (-0.48%) and female unemployment by 1,618,484 after decreasing by 5,833 (-0.36%) in relation to the month of June. If compared to July 2022, male unemployment fell by 96,034 people (-8.31%) and female unemployment fell by 109,904 (-6.36%).

For its part, the unemployment of young people under 25 years of age fell by 453 people (-0.25%) in July compared to the previous month, while unemployment of 25 years and over fell by 10,515 (-0. 42%).

Work has highlighted that the total number of young people under 25 years of age in a situation of unemployment is 184,038, the lowest figure since records exist. “It has been falling for 27 consecutive months in year-on-year terms,” ​​the Ministry has highlighted.

Registered unemployment among foreigners decreased by 7,702 unemployed compared to the previous month (-2.23%), reaching a total of 338,083 people, which means 22,081 fewer unemployed than a year earlier (-6.13%).

According to the data released this Wednesday, registered unemployment in July 2023 fell in ten autonomous communities, the falls in absolute figures being the most marked in Andalucía (-5,166), Comunidad de Madrid (-2,926) and Galicia (-1,579).

On the contrary, unemployment rose in the remaining seven, led by Catalonia, with 1,612 more unemployed, the Balearic Islands (854) and the Basque Country (796).

As for the provinces, registered unemployment decreased in 34 led by Madrid (-2,926), Cádiz (-2,413) and Málaga (-1,554). On the contrary, it increased in the remaining 18, among which the increases in Valencia (1,714), Barcelona (1,684) and the Balearic Islands (854) stand out.

The total number of contracts registered during the month of July was 1,431,383, which represents a drop of 224,132 (-13.54%) over the same month in 2022.

Among them, 566,440 permanent employment contracts have been registered, which represents a decrease of 119,552 (-17.43%) over the same month of the previous year.

In total, 39.57% of the contracts carried out in July were permanent, a percentage almost three points lower than that registered in June, when the proportion of permanent contracts was 42.32%.

Indefinite contracts for the month of July are divided, in terms of working hours, into 220,297 full-time, 125,284 part-time and 220,859 discontinuous permanent ones. Compared to July 2022, the former have decreased by 64,955 (-22.77%), the latter have decreased by 33,866 (-21.28%) and the latter have decreased by 20,731 (-8.58%).

On the other hand, the temporary contracts registered in the month of July 2023 were 864,943, which means 104,580 (-10.79%) less than the same month of the previous year, representing 60.43% of the total.

Regarding the duration of their workday, temporary contracts in the month of July are divided into 559,961 full-time and 304,982 part-time. Compared with the same month of the previous year, the former have decreased by 66,039 (-10.55%) and the latter have decreased by 38,541 (-11.22%).

The Ministry has also reported that spending on unemployment benefits reached 1,692.7 million euros in June (latest data available), 9.6% more than in the same month of 2022.

The benefits paid since January of this year incorporate the increase in the regulatory base to 60% from the seventh month, compared to the percentage of 50% that had been applied since 2012 for the calculation of the benefit.

As a consequence of this, the average gross amount of the contributory unemployment benefit increased by 7.2% in June, up to 940.1 euros per month.

The average monthly expense per beneficiary, without including the agricultural subsidy of Andalusia and Extremadura, in the month of June 2023 was 1,021.2 euros, which represents an increase over the same month of the previous year of 76.99 euros (8 ,1%).

The total number of beneficiaries of unemployment benefits stood at 1,694,048 people at the end of the sixth month of the year, reaching a coverage rate of 67.18%, compared to 61.62% a year earlier.

The benefit data is always one month behind the unemployment data, so the Ministry has published this Wednesday the unemployment figures for July and the benefit statistics for June.
