HONG KONG, Dec. 8, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — The Yidan Prize Foundation, the global philanthropic foundation behind the world’s highest educational award, hosted its highly anticipated Yidan Prize Summit in Hong Kong on December 4, under the theme “Ideas that cause change: a focus on solutions that promote education.”

In a rapidly changing world, it has become vital to equip all students with creative and critical thinking skills, so that they become well-rounded global citizens. To discuss how we can better meet the needs of today’s students, the 2023 Yidan Prize Summit brought together education experts, policymakers, and philanthropic foundations to explore innovative ideas in research and practice, all with the power to expand the access to quality education.

Dr. Charles CHEN Yidan, founder of the Yidan Prize, welcomed guests from around the world and emphasized that ideas can cause change. “These visionary educators who join us today believe strongly in the transformative power of ideas. Their collective vision leads people to understand that all students can and should succeed. They challenge us to reconceive what good classrooms and good classrooms look like. teaching practices. They lead us to the conclusion that a good education can be accessible to all. Their actions are continually reshaping education, further solidifying their commitment to this belief,” I say.

Joe Colombano, head of the United Nations Resident Coordinator’s Office in China, opened with a speech on the need to renew investment and innovation in education. He reflected on the concept of what quality education means today and proposed thoughtful questions to set the stage for the day’s discussions. He emphasized that education must keep pace with the changing needs of the economy and underlined the broader goals of education beyond mere employment: as a means for students to achieve their full potential. Colombano pointed out that quality education is much more than one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it is also the catalyst to achieve the 17 SDGs.

In the first panel, education experts from the University of Hong Kong were joined by Professor Michelene (Micki) Chi, winner of the 2023 Yidan Prize for Educational Research, Michelene (Micki) Chi, Regents Professor and Dorothy Bray Professor of Science and Teaching , Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College at Arizona State University. They discussed Micki’s innovative theory of cognitive engagement, called ICAP, which provides teachers with a proven framework for facilitating quality engagement in the classroom, helping to improve teaching methods from kindergarten to the post-secondary level and beyond. . Moderated by Dr. Christopher Thomas, Director of Partnerships at the Yidan Prize Foundation, the panelists discussed how interactive, constructive and dynamic learning activities contribute to the development of student autonomy and foster collaboration.

In the second panel, Dr Laura Savage, CEO of the International Education Funders Group (IEFG), spoke with leaders who are successfully driving social change to ensure more students have access to the transformative power of education. Yidan Luminaries Council members Dr. Rukmini Banerji, Vicky Colbert, and Wendy Kopp reflected on their common experience of catalyzing systems change by harnessing the influence of a shared mission and collective (and locally rooted) leadership. They talked about the importance of foundational learning, strong partnerships with government and civil society, and how everyone from parents to college students can become agents of change.

In the afternoon, the summit explored how innovative higher education models can break down barriers to accessibility and affordability. Shai Reshef, president and founder of People’s University, winner of the 2023 Yidan Educational Development Award, spoke with Professor Arthur Levine, president emeritus of Teachers College at Columbia University, about how we can ensure higher education keeps pace of our changing global economies and digital knowledge. Shai spoke about the importance of harnessing the potential of open source online technology, so that every qualified student can have access to quality higher education.

In the last session of the day, Lucy Lake and Angeline Murimirwa, recipients of the 2020 Yidan Prize for Educational Development, were joined by Baela Raza Jamil, CEO of Idara-e-Taleem-o-Aagahi, and Ruth Kagia, former director of World Bank Global Education, to discuss radical inclusion in education. They talked about how putting the most marginalized and vulnerable at the center of policymaking is the key to driving change in and through education. Panelists noted that radical inclusion is bold and unapologetic: every student must be educated and protected. Intersectionality and collaboration between policymakers and education professionals and researchers are non-negotiable in this process.
