The U.S. Supreme Court building in Washington, July 19, 2024. Kevin Mohatt | ReutersThe Supreme Court on Thursday was like, “Hey, Federal Reserve board members might be safe from getting fired by the president!” This ruling means that President Donald Trump can still fire two members of other federal agencies’ boards, but not the ones from the Federal Reserve. The Supreme Court was kinda sassy, saying they disagree with Gwynne Wilcox and Cathy Harris claiming that their terminations raise questions about the constitutionality of protections for Federal Reserve board members. They were like, “The Federal Reserve is like, totally different from other stuff, so yeah.”
The three liberal members of the court were like, “Nah, we don’t agree with the six conservative justices.” This means Wilcox and Harris are off their boards for now. Trump had been told not to remove them by a lower court, but the Supreme Court was like, “Hold up, Trump can do what he wants.” So, Wilcox and Harris are still out of a job while they fight back. Not really sure why this matters, but it seems like Trump might have a hard time firing anyone from the Federal Reserve according to the Supreme Court. So, yeah, good luck with that, Trump.
It’s all a bit confusing, but basically, the Supreme Court is saying Trump might not be able to fire Federal Reserve board members without a good reason. But who knows, things could change. Just gotta wait and see what happens next. It’s like a drama unfolding in real life. But hey, that’s politics for you.
