CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Cincinnati Zoo is having a bit of a baby boom.

After making news with the premature birth of a hippo, caretakers at the zoo are now looking after three Malayan tiger cubs that were born Friday, reports say.

The zoo has moved the tiger cubs to its nursery because their mother’s maternal instincts have not taken hold and officials were worried their body temperature would get too low, the Associated Press reports.

“It’s not uncommon for first-time tiger moms not to know what to do. They can be aggressive and even harm or kill the cubs,” Mike Dulaney, curator of mammals and vice coordinator of the Malayan Tiger SSP, tells fox19.com. “Nursery staff is keeping them warm and feeding them every three hours.”

It’s expected the tiger cubs will be put on display in the spring when they no longer require constant care, reports say.

There are fewer than 500 Malayan tigers in the world.
