CLEVELAND, Ohio — You don’t often find pigs at animal rescues, but Geauga Humane Society’s Rescue Village in Russell Township currently is taking care of a 3-year-old, approximate 100-pound hog that needs a home.
Rudy was brought to the humane society after his owner could no longer care for the pig.
“Rudy loves exploring, relaxing in the sun and hanging out with friends,” said Leah Backo, the humane society’s marketing and public relations coordinator. She said Rudy’s adopter would have to be an experienced pig owner who knows how to manage behavior and has the proper space to house such an animal.
Rudy is among several dogs and cats up for adoption in Geauga County this week. Last week, The Plain Dealer and cleveland.com featured a photo gallery of adoptable animals at Cuyahoga County rescues. In coming weeks, we will highlight animals from rescues in Lorain, Medina, Summit, Lake and Portage counties.
This week we have a slew of cats, including several feral and special-needs felines, from Happy Tails Animal Sanctuary in Chesterland. Happy Tails, which currently isn’t accepting cats because it is filled to capacity, is a mostly cage-less rescue that lets cats run around freely, except for those being treated for an illness.
At Happy Tails, Butch is a 5-year-old orange and white male that loves relaxing in the sun. He is affectionate and gets along with other cats. There’s also Candy, a 6-year-old special-needs kitty with a chronic eye infection. It isn’t unusual for cats like her to be adopted.
“We absolutely have people who adopt special needs cats, senior and even feral cats,” said Doreen Lazarus, who has been a Happy Tails volunteer practically since the rescue began in the early 1980s. “But people aren’t going to adopt a feral for a house pet. They keep them in a barn or warehouse and feed them and take care of their medical needs.”
Here is contact information for the rescues in Geauga County that are featured today. Adoption fees vary by type and age of animal.
