Boston Marathon bombing survivor Jeff Bauman, whose uplifting story about becoming a dad and getting married after losing both legs is the subject of the upcoming film “Stronger,” is getting divorced, according to a report.
Bauman, one of the most memorable faces of the April 2013 bombings, and his then-fiancée, Erin Hurley, welcomed their daughter, Nora Gail, in July 2014, about four months before they tied the knot.
“Jeff and Erin have decided that it is best to move forward as friends,” a Bauman family spokesman told The Hollywood Reporter.
“Though their relationship has changed, their admiration, love and mutual respect for each other will never waver. They are dedicated to loving and parenting their daughter, Nora, and ask for privacy,” the spokesman said.
A marketing image from “Stronger”—based on Bauman’s memoir of the same name—posted on star Jake Gyllenhaal’s Facebook page May 12 features him and actress Tatiana Maslany in a tender close-up with the caption “Love is strong.”
Sources close to the movie told The Hollywood Reporter that it won’t be altered because of the split. Lionsgate hasn’t set an exact release date for the film, which is due out later this year.
Director David Gordon Green, Gyllenhaal and Maslany worked closely with the couple before shooting the film in late spring 2016. Gyllenhaal and Bauman, an avid Boston Red Sox fan, threw the ceremonial first pitches at a game in late April of that year.
Bauman had been waiting at the marathon’s finish line for then-girlfriend Hurley on April 15, 2013, when a bomb tore off his legs.
An Associated Press photo that captured the severely injured Bauman being rushed away in a wheelchair became synonymous with that dark day and he soon epitomized the “Boston Strong” mantra that followed the tragedy.
He also helped the feds identify Tamerlan Tsarnaev, one of the bombers.
“He was alone. He wasn’t watching the race,” Bauman said of Tsarnaev during the federal trial of Tsarnaev’s younger brother, Dzhokhar.
“I looked at him, and he just kind of looked down at me,” Bauman said of Tamerlan, who was later killed by cops.
“Patriots Day,” the first movie about the Boston Marathon bombing from Lionsgate, stars Mark Wahlberg and opened nationwide Jan. 13. That film has grossed $30.1 million to date in the US, the entertainment site reported.
