A fire broke out Tuesday night in a three-story rowhouse next to Fremont Avenue’s historic arabber stables.

No horses were injured from the small blaze, which did not spread to the stables, said Michael Goines, who helps muck out the stalls and occasionally works as an arabber. The fire in the 1100 block of Fremont Avenue broke out around 9 p.m. and was contained quickly.

The stables on Fremont Avenue are one of the last few locations in the city where arabbers — who sell vegetables and fruit with elaborately decorated horse-drawn carriages — remain.

Goines said he was watching the Wayans Brothers when he saw flashing lights from police next door. Then, someone came by and told him there was a fire and he needed to get the horses out.

"I said, what? Again?" said Goines, explaining that there had been fires at the vacant building next door, a former printing shop, in the past and that addicts used the house to shoot up.

Firefighters quickly contained a small fire at Comfy Feet Spa at the Annapolis mall Tuesday morning.

Goines said he moved the stables’ three horses into different stalls to escape the smoke, including his horse, Big Clarence.
