CLEVELAND, Ohio — What was the best single of 2016?

Was it “One Dance” by Drake, which spent 10 weeks at No. 1 this past summer? Or maybe it was “Closer,” that non-sensical ear worm of a song by the Chainsmokers that stayed at the top of the charts for 12 weeks towards the end of the year?

Well, neither is among the nominees for Record of the Year at this year’s Grammys. “Closer” was released too late to be considered this year and, as far as Drake is concerned, the academy chose to instead nominate “Work,” his collaboration with Rihanna.

In fact, the list of nominees reads more like a list of the best songs of 2015. Adele’s “Hello” was released nearly a year and a half ago as was Twenty One Pilot’s “Stressed Out.” Beyonce’s “Formation” and Lukas Graham’ “7 Years” came out last February, though radio never seemed to get sick of playing the latter.

The Grammys air Sunday at 8 p.m. on CBS.
