BRUNSWICK – The community had its first official look at the latest 55-and-over development in the city – and the first of its kind anywhere for Pittsburgh-based Harbor Woods Development – on Jan. 19.

“Why Brunswick? Because it’s badly needed here,” said Harbor Woods president, Frank Branovan, of Harbor Woods at Brunswick, a 127-unit, 55-and-older community of one-and-two bedroom units at 4255 Center Road, which broke ground in November 2015.

“There is a void in the community; Baby Boomers are retiring and living longer,” he said. “We’re going to have fun here.”

The focus of the Redwin community, Branovan said, is independence. The pet-friendly facility includes planned activities and social events, along with a fitness center, library, beauty and barber salon and family and game rooms.

“I’m getting a chick pad,” laughed Cindie Schneider, executive director for the HANDS Foundation during the Harbor Woods grand opening and tour.

Branovan said the community is geared toward active seniors who may no longer be interested in the demands of home ownership. The company is currently looking at additional locations across Ohio and Pennsylvania, he added.

Ohio State Representative and former Medina County commissioner and Brunswick city councilman, Steve Hambley, said that while he currently represents the 69th District, a bit south of Brunswick, the city is still his hometown.

“When I came on city council, housing was identified as one of our biggest needs,” Hambley said, noting that developments like Harbor Woods offer the most important aspect of that need.

“This is offering people options,” he said.
