MEDINA, Ohio – Elementary school students in the Highland Local School District have joined together for the third annual One District, One Book program.
Each January, all students at Granger, Hinckley and Sharon elementary schools receive a copy of the same book to read. This year’s book is “The Lemonade War” by Jacqueline Davies.
Students participate in numerous activities relating to the book’s message and the district’s reading theme.
The program is funded by The Highland Foundation.

Watch fairytales come to life in the Highland Thespians production of “The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon” Feb. 23-25.
Classic stories such as “Cinderella,” “Little Red Riding Hood,” and “The Princess and the Frog” will join lesser known tales such as “The Devil’s Grandmother” and “Lean Lisa” – but with a comedic twist.
Playwright Don Zolidis has connected all of these tales into one hilarious super-story. Watch as Hansel gives into peer pressure and Snow White tells her story from the modern feminist perspective.
The show’s assistant director is Highland High School senior Adam Graber. Seniors Abby Long and Brennan Beranek have leading roles, supported by 16 additional cast members.
Show time is 7 p.m. Feb. 23, 24 and 25 and 2 p.m. Feb. 25 in the high school auditorium. Tickets are $6 for students and $8 for adults.
Second-graders bring Lego build to life
Shannon Simmons from “Bricks for Kids” recently offered a hands-on Lego-building demonstration to students in Kristen Robinson’s second-grade class at Hinckley Elementary School.
Simmons taught the students how to build a paper crinkle machine using the interlocking toy bricks. Students followed an instruction manual and added their own creative touches.
Mystery readers visit elementary schools

Students in the National Honor Society at Highland High School recently served as mystery readers at Granger, Hinckley and Sharon elementary schools as part of the One District, One Book program.
The high schoolers read passages from “The Lemonade War” and talked to the younger students about the book they are all reading.
The mystery readers included Mike Back, Kaila Oberhaus, Katie Corvo, Victoria Grayson, Sarah Vala, Logan Bowers, Hannah Liggett, Gabby Quartaraco, Ella Foutz, Mallory Doak, Abby Catron, Annamarie DiGiacobbe, Nolan Kinsey, Corey Dennis, Angelina Gentilin, Karina Pedersen, Kaitlyn Niese, Connor Vomero, Andrea Arline, Ray Flannery, Cecilia Mainzer and Ava Mastrianni.
32 Speech and Debate Team members heading to state tournament
The Highland High School Speech and Debate Team will be traveling to Columbus for the state tournament with 32 state qualifiers and eight alternates.
This is the largest number of state qualifiers Highland has ever produced.
Highland finished second in the Akron District State Qualifying Tournament on Feb. 4.
Highland’s state qualifiers are Victoria Grayson, Abby Catron, Ava Mastrianni, Ray Flannery, Lauren Johnson, Emma Medwid, Austin Levan, Noah Zona, Andy Mockbee, Brock Withers, Amelia Mainzer, Cecilia Mainzer, Kelly Meaden, Chris Sollenberger, Grace Braver, Evan Buck, Katie Linger, Grace McCormick, Emily Hoose, Taylor Headrick, Andras Fabian, Mia Shaffer, Ava Shaffer, Samantha Zeiger, Tian Treb, Braden Webb, Quade Mainzer, Emma Crone, Nick McFadden, Clara Vorndran, Scott Blum and Ben Rife.
Alternates include Spencer Phillips, Julie Origilio, Alyson Hagen, Nathan Gillin, Miranda Scrivens, Andrew Sever, Kennedy Shelton and Emily Knoer.
The team will now focus on the upcoming National Qualifying Tournament.
