MEDINA, Ohio – Highland High School and Highland Middle School students have been getting their mindfulness on, thanks to a new yoga program taught by Heather Baur.
Baur has been teaching yoga classes during physical education classes at the middle school and after school to high school students in the Media Center.
Students are learning power basic yoga, which emphasizes core strength and flexibility. Practicing yoga can also help improve focus and increase self-confidence.
The classes, which run through May, are made possible through the generosity of The Highland Foundation.
Soccer player commits to Tiffin

Highland High School senior Elayna Yuschak has singed a letter of intent to attend and play soccer for Tiffin University in the fall.
She has received a partial academic scholarship to the Division II university, where she plans to study education.
Elayna was a four-year letterman for the Lady Hornets soccer team, served as captain and was named Defensive Player of the Year by her coach. She was named to 1st Team Suburban League, 1st Team All Medina County and 1st Team All District her senior year.
She is the daughter of Bob and Natalie Yuschak of Montville Township.
Preschooler steps in as Granger Principal for the Day
Granger Elementary School preschooler William Schoger had the opportunity to serve as Principal for the Day on Jan. 25.
William assisted Principal LeAnn Gausman throughout the afternoon, and the two enjoyed lunch together.
William is the son of Robert and Melissa Schoger of Montville Township.
His special day was one of the many items auctioned off during the 12th annual Highland Foundation Dinner and Benefit Auction in November.
District receives Auditor of State Award with Distinction
The Highland Local School District’s excellent financial record keeping has earned it the Auditor of State Award with Distinction.
Highland has earned this honor each year since its inception in 2011. To receive the award, a district must return a clean audit report.
January Students of the Month
Andrea Arline
Highland High School seniors Andrea Arline and Elliott Bates have been selected as the school’s Medina County Kiwanis Students of the Month for January.
Andrea is a senior class representative, donation officer on the St. Baldrick’s Committee, organizer of the National Honor Society book drive and a member of the Key Club, Science Club and orchestra.
She was a member of this year’s Homecoming Court and runs varsity track. Her scores in the Online Math League and American Mathematics Competitions contests rank her first at Highland.
She also serves as a neonatal intensive care unit volunteer at Akron Children’s Hospital and volunteers at the Regina Health Center nursing home.
The daughter of Andrew and Sandra Arline of Hinckley Township plans to major in biomedical engineering. Her dream is to one day be a heart surgeon at the Cleveland Clinic.
Elliott Bates
Elliot is president of the senior class, a DARE role model and a two-year Peer Leader. He is an active member of the National Honor Society, Kiwanis Club and Ski Club.
He is a skipper for the Edgewater Yacht Club Sail Team and the Chippewa Yacht Club Sail Team. He won the Corinthian Award and first place at Cleveland Race Week for the Edgewater club.
He is also an Advanced Open Water Diver and works at Medina Municipal Airport. He is a private pilot in the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association.
Elliott is the son of Steve and Sarah Bates of Sharon Township. He plans to study environmental engineering and pre-law at Miami University of Ohio. He is also setting his sights on becoming a rescue diver and receiving his commercial pilot license.
