MEDINA, Ohio – The second History Fair at the Medina County District Library on Jan. 28 proved to be another success. It was organized by the Medina County District Library, which had its own table filled with ways their collection can help people learn about their family or community with a table alongside the Genealogy Society.

Kathy Petras, from the research staff, was instrumental in setting the event and had a very interesting beginners’ genealogy packet for visitors with the resources available through the library. Check it out at mcdlgenealogyspot.blogspot.com/.

A wide variety of historical societies, museums and the Medina County Genealogical Society were all on hand to display artifacts and information about their organizations

The variety of items ranged from old maps to a wood “pipe” that once carried water beneath the streets of Medina displayed by the Little Wiz Museum.

Last year was also the first “history day” for the newly organized group of Medina County historical organizations. Its first countywide tour day featured 16 museums open to the public. It proved to be so successful that it was impossible for everyone to get to each place.

The drive-it-yourself tour will now be divided into quadrants, similar to the Fall Foliage Tour so visitors have time to see most of the displays each year. The day will now officially be called the “Dandelion Drive …a Journey in Time,” complete with a logo. The event will be held the Sunday prior to Memorial Day weekend each year.

This year’s Dandelion Drive will feature the Medina area from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 21. The museums to visit will include Medina County Historical Society’s John Smart House, Little Wiz Fire Museum, York Township Historical Society, Litchfield Historical Society and the Town Hall Engine House.

At its meeting in January, the group also selected a new name and will now officially be the Historical Council of Medina County.

The next meeting of the Council will be at 7 p.m. March 20 at Granger Historical Society.

For information about the Council or Dandelion Drive, contact the Medina County Convention and Visitors Bureau, 32 Public Square, Medina, or call 330-722-5502.
