Inmates have been breaking out of a federal prison in Atlanta for years — grabbing booze, guns and cell phones — before sneaking back into the facility unnoticed, a report says.
The prisoners have been “temporarily escaping” from the medium-security US Penitentiary since early 2013, which is when local authorities first stumbled upon the operation, according to CNN.
Court documents show that the Atlanta Police Department learned of the breakouts in January of that year, and began immediately investigating the prisoners soon-after.
Cops believe the inmates had been escaping through holes that they cut in the prison fence and coordinating meet-ups with people on the outside.
At the start of their probe, investigators spotted a car parked one day along the fence. Several individuals were said to be inside, donning ski masks and jumpsuits, CNN reports.
When officers walked up to the vehicle, the suspects fled on foot — climbing back over the prison fence and darting back into the facility, according to court records.
Authorities later found a bottle of alcohol, two dozen cell phones and a pair of loaded handguns inside the car, the documents show.
It’s unclear exactly when this incident took place.
As the APD continued to keep tabs on the area, officers discovered more man-sized holes in the fence and personal items — such as a prison-issued laundry bag, prison-issued gloves and an MP3 player, court records show.
Cops installed surveillance cameras in the same location a month later and were eventually able to catch several inmates breaking out over the course of three consecutive weeks. One of them was Justin B. Stinson — who was allegedly caught by FBI agents while fetching a black duffel bag filled with contraband, CNN reports.
Inside the sack was said to be a cell phone, scissors, some food, two 1.75-liter bottles of Jose Cuervo tequila, Newport cigarettes and four boxes of Black & Mild Cigars.
