A woman found dead following a fire at her Penn Hills home may died before the blaze, according to Allegheny County officials.
The fire was reported at 1:10 p.m. in a two-story home at 2558 School St. in Penn Hills' Universal section. The elderly resident was pulled from the home by her husband, but paramedic attempts to revive her were unsuccessful.
A Friday evening press release from the county Department of Emergency Services and county police stated, “Preliminary investigations indicate that the woman died before the fire began.” The release added those findings are pending an autopsy by the county Medical Examiner's office.
Authorities have not publicly identified the victim.
Penn Hills Assistant Fire Chief David Zacchia said the fire started in the basement of the home and was quickly put out by firefighters. The Universal fire hall is a few hundred yards from the house.
The fire was contained to the basement, he said.
No other injuries were reported. A cause of the fire has not been determined. County and Penn Hills fire officials are conducting the investigation, Zacchia said.
