CLEVELAND, Ohio — Police are investigating after a man was pistol-whipped and robbed near the Cleveland Clinic.

The incident happened about 10 p.m. Tuesday at Cedar Avenue and East 101st Street in the city’s Fairfax neighborhood.

The victim, a 36-year-old Lakewood resident, told police he was robbed while retrieving a car for one of his employees because he was afraid “she might get robbed if she went to get it,” according to a Cleveland police report.

The man had just turned onto East 101st Street from Cedar Avenue when two men ran up on him from behind.

One robber told him “give me the money” and both brandished guns, the report says.

One man snatched the victim’s iPhone and his wallet that contained cash, a Cleveland Clinic ID, and other cards, the report says. The duo demanded more, so the man handed over his employee’s car keys.

One robber struck the man over his head with a gun and the pair made their way to the employee’s car, where the victim spotted them “fumbling around” with the items they stole, the report says.

The victim ran off to a Cleveland Clinic parking garage, where he used an emergency box to call police.

Investigators later tracked the iPhone to an address in East Cleveland, but did not say if they were able to recover it. The car was not stolen during the incident.

No one had been charged in the case as of Wednesday evening.
