A man tried to rape a drunken Columbia University student on a Manhattan street corner, police sources said Monday.

The predator was seen trying to rape the woman on a trash can at the corner at 51st Street and 8th Avenue around 2 a.m. Sunday, and the horrified witness called 911, sources said.

When police arrived, they talked to the suspect, Lorenzo Williams, who claimed that he was the woman’s friend and was just trying to help her get to the train station, sources said.

But the eyewitness approached the cops and said he saw the man trying to have sex with the woman from behind and that neither had pants on, sources said.

Police took Williams into custody, and he told them he didn’t know the woman but didn’t have intercourse with her.

The woman was taken to Bellevue Hospital and later told cops that she had been out with friends for dinner and drinks but didn’t remember anything after that. She told them she didn’t know the man.

Williams was charged with attempted rape, sex assault and forcible touching.
