WADSWORTH, Ohio — Hathaway Brown’s second half changes led the girls basketball team a 54-47 victory against Wadsworth on the road Saturday.

The Blazers regained the lead after erasing a nine-point deficit and never trailed again.

“It was something that we needed,” said Hathaway Brown coach Mike Coreno. “I don’t think we’ve been playing at a high enough level and to come down here on the road, and get a win was big for us.”

Both teams were tied at 11 after the end of the first quarter, but Hathaway Brown’s rebounding struggles as of late hurt them in the second quarter.

Wadsworth, ranked No. 13 in the cleveland.com Top 25, stretched out to a seven-point lead at halftime against No. 14 Hathaway Brown.

Wadsworth junior wing Peyton Banks led the charge as they outrebounded the Blazers and made second chance opportunities. The junior scored 13 points in the second half.

The Grizzlies opened the second half with Banks scoring the first shot to take a 27-18 lead, but Hathaway Brown’s tempo off of missed shots and drives to the basket hurt Wadsworth by the end of the third quarter.

The Blazers took a quick break between quarters after outscoring the home team 18-6 led by junior guard Jackie Carman and senior forward Dani Lawson combining for 13 points.

“Our aggressiveness went down on the offensive end especially,” Wadsworth coach Andrew Booth said “It’s tough when you are playing a team that is aggressive and as athletic as Hathaway Brown is…the word we used in the locker room was disappointed and frustrated.”

The fourth quarter started with a 36-31 lead in favor of the visiting team, but Wadsworth came out with a 6-2 run and cut the deficit to one-point.

But the Blazers extended their lead behind the efforts of junior guard Hanna Harlor. In back-to-back plays, Harlor helped Hathaway Brown jump to a six-point lead knocking down a 3-pointer and blocking a shot on the other end of the court. The ensuing defensive play gave Carman two shots at free throw line taking a 43-37 lead.

Hathaway Brown spent the rest of the evening at the charity stripe shooting 11 of 13.

Banks led all scorers with 24 points followed by Carman with 16 for the Blazers. Harlor (15) and Lawson (14) were the only other two players to score in double digit figures.
