WASHINGTON, D. C. – Moments after newly-elected President Donald Trump announced his selection of Colorado’s Neil Gorsuch to be the next U.S. Supreme Court Justice, the commentary began.
President Donald Trump nominates Neil Gorsuch to be next U.S. Supreme Court Justice
Ohio’s Democratic senator, Sherrod Brown, immediately announced his opposition, declaring the nominee to be “far outside of the judicial mainstream” with rulings that deem corporations are people, are hostile toward anti-discrimination and criminal justice protections, and oppose women’s rights to basic healthcare at places like Planned Parenthood.
“The people of Ohio deserve Supreme Court Justices who will defend the rights of working families over Wall Street and corporate special interests – and Judge Gorsuch’s record doesn’t pass that test,” said a statement from Brown.
I cannot support any #SCOTUSnominee who does not recognize that corporations are not people. Read my full statement. – SB pic.twitter.com/jUdCtj70fH

Ohio’s Republican Senator, Rob Portman, welcomed the nomination, saying Gorsuch “has an outstanding record as a fair-minded, independent, and universally-respected judge.”
“I look forward to considering his nomination as he goes through a fair and thorough evaluation process,” Portman continued.

Here are more reactions to the Gorsuch nomination:
Republican U.S. Rep. Bob Gibbs of Holmes County:
“Neil Gorsuch will make an outstanding Supreme Court Justice. His judicial philosophy appears to be in line with the late Justice Scalia and he takes a strict interpretation of the Constitution. President Trump demonstrated his commitment to the principle of religious liberty by selecting Gorsuch. I look forward to seeing Judge Gorsuch confirmed by the Senate as soon as possible.”
Judge Gorsuch’s radical views on women’s rights are deeply troubling to everyone fighting to #ProtectOurCare https://t.co/TDU2FufoKx

Judge Gorsuch is eminently qualified to serve on the #SCOTUS. @POTUS should be commended. Look forward to a fair Senate process.

It’s good to see someone in the image of Justice Scalia be nominated to the SCOTUS. Judge Gorsuch will strictly uphold the constitution.

Republican U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson of Marietta:
“I applaud President Trump’s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to the United States Supreme Court. Judge Gorsuch has an excellent constitutional background, and was confirmed without any opposition to a seat on the Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals in 2006. Few judges in the United States are as qualified as Judge Gorsuch to serve Betmatik on the Supreme Court and occupy the seat once held by Justice Scalia. I hope the Senate quickly approves this nomination.
I support @POTUS’ nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to serve on the Supreme Court of the United States. https://t.co/cQ3XioEZSX

Gorsuch put corps over workers, been hostile toward women’s rights & been an ideolog. Skeptical that he can be a strong, independent Justice

Ohio Republican Party Chair Jane Timken:
President Trump promised to appoint someone in the mold of Justice Scalia and I am confident that Judge Gorsuch will fit that mold by faithfully upholding the Constitution, protecting our individual rights, and preserving the idea of limited government. I strongly urge Senator Sherrod Brown not to engage in efforts to delay or obstruct a vote on Judge Gorsuch. Senator Brown said last year that obstructing the confirmation process of a Supreme Court nominee is disrespectful to the voters, the President and the Constitution. The voters have spoken, and Senator Brown should respect the will of the American people.”
Today’s announcement a reminder of the deep offense to the Constitution committed by ’16 Senate by not having a hearing. An illegitimate act

National Rifle Association Institute for Legislative Action chief Chris W. Cox:
” During his tenure on the Tenth Circuit, Gorsuch has demonstrated his belief that the Constitution should be applied as the framers intended. To that end, he has supported the individual right to self-defense. Specifically, he wrote in an opinion that “the Second Amendment protects an individual’s right to own firearms and may not be infringed lightly. On behalf of our five million members, the NRA strongly supports Judge Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation to the U.S. Supreme Court. We will be activating our members and tens of millions of supporters throughout the country in support of Judge Gorsuch. He will protect our right to keep and bear arms and is an outstanding choice to fill Justice Scalia’s seat.”
Gorsuch’s extreme views should disqualify him from sitting on the Supreme Court, and we strongly urge the Senate to reject his nomination. pic.twitter.com/26G6faO9xJ
