Toronto filmmaker and conservationist Rob Stewart has gone missing during a dive in the Florida Keys, the U.S Coast Guard says.

A Coast Guard team that includes a helicopter, boat and divers began looking for him Tuesday evening after he was reported missing while diving near Alligator Reef late Tuesday afternoon.

Stewart, 37, is best known for his 2006 documentary Sharkwater, which examines the impact of shark-hunting on the ocean ecosystem.

The search began after a Coast Guard command centre received a report at 5:13 p.m. Savoybetting on Tuesday about a missing diver from a crew member of Stewart’s vessel, Pisces, the Coast Guard said in a news release.

Assisting with the search are members of the U.S. Navy, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, the Coast Guard said Wednesday.

Stewart was last seen diving near Islamorada in the Florida Keys, a chain of islands nearly 200 kilometres off the state’s southern tip.
