CLEVELAND, Ohio — Yes, that fancy Taco Bell that serves booze is still coming to Cleveland, and now it has an opening date.

The Taco Bell Cantina will open on the first floor of the old May Company building, in part of the former Cadillac Ranch space sometime in April.

“Yes, we are moving forward,” a Taco Bell spokesperson said in an email. “We are very excited about investing in downtown Cleveland and look forward to opening this restaurant.”

The fast-casual spot, located just off Public Square, will be similar to the Taco Bell Cantinas in Austin and Chicago and offer beer, Twisted Freezes and shareable appetizers in addition to the familiar Taco Bell menu. The atmosphere will be decidedly more hip than the typical Taco Bell– think local artwork on the walls, community tables and free Wi-Fi.

“Today’s consumers are living in more urban settings and our new restaurants cater to their lifestyle in adapting our traditional restaurant concept to fit their modern needs,” Taco Bell CEO Brian Niccol said in a statement back in 2015 when the cantina concept was introduced.

The Cleveland project has been in the works since last June, when renderings presented before the city’s Landmark’s Commission showed a 2,800 square foot restaurant with 30-seat patio. It was originally supposed to open late last year but pushed back to the spring.
