The young Socialists in SPD have a new chairman. The Berliner Kevin Kühnert was elected at Federal Congress of Jusos with 225 of 297 votes. He is successor to Johanna Uekermann, who gave up office after four years.

After his election, Kühnert announced opposition to a possible grand coalition at federal level. “We want more polarization and intensification. We are bulwark against large coalitions, “he said at meeting in Saarbrücken.
The 28-year-old rejected demand that SPD should assume its state-political responsibility and refore enter into a large coalition. “We don’t need any help when it comes to responsibility.” It will always be a question of responsibility when it comes to grand coalition.
The SPD had to renew itself, and failed Jamaica exploratory talks had not changed anything, said Kühnert. He wanted Jusos to push for renewal over next two years.

The former Juso chairman Uekermann also spoke out against a large coalition at congress. The debate within SPD about it, y think wrong, said Uekermann. A more social and equitable policy cannot be made with Union.

Even though SPD had rejected a renewed grand coalition on evening of Bundestag election in September. The Federal Executive Board reaffirmed this in a decision following failed probes between union, FDP and Greens. After that, however, parts of party declined from ir categorical no. SPD chief Martin Schulz finally announced that party base would be voted on by possible government participation.
Schulz justified turnaround by fact that a blockade of formation of government is out of question. “It was always clear: we will not be obstructionist for sake of obstruction.” However, re is no automatism in any direction.

Schulz also appeared at Juso Congress. “If federal president asks me to talk, n you will understand that I cannot and will not turn down a desire to talk,” said Schulz in his speech, and: “I do not aspire to a large coalition, nor do I aspire to a minority government. I am not striving for any reelection. ” What he aspires to do is to discuss ways that are best to make people’s lives a bit better every day.
