A 35-year-old Lower Lake resident walking along a rural Lake County highway died early Friday after he was hit by vehicle, according to the Highway Patrol.
The 12:10 a.m. crash happened on Highway 20 near Pomo Way, south of Upper Lake.
Driver Matthew Hochleutner, 51, of Upper Lake wasn’t able to see the man who was walking in or near the highway’s eastbound lane, the CHP said in a news release.
Hochleutner was driving about 50 mph in a 2006 Toyota Tundra when he struck the man. The impact threw the pedestrian onto the pickup’s hood and to the highway shoulder. The pedestrian, whose name hasn’t been released, died from the impact, the CHP said.
Officers determined the driver wasn’t under the influence of alcohol or drugs. The pedestrian’s sobriety remained under investigation, the CHP said.
Hochleutner was wearing his seat belt and wasn’t injured.
