SAN ANTONIO — A downtown home was saved from destruction Monday after a quick-thinking off-duty firefighter who spotted smoke shut off the electricity before notifying authorities.

Battalion Chief Robert Mikel said the firefighter confirmed the blaze around 11:40 a.m. in the 200 block of Kingsbury Street.

“He was just driving by and saw smoke coming out of the house,” Mikel said. “He was able to confirm it and turn off the electricity inside.”

When firefighters arrived, “they quickly knocked it down,” Mikel said.

The fire started somewhere in the living room and spread to the attic. It caused $15,000 in damage to the home.
