SAN ANTONIO — A 34-year-old man who police say was attempting to steal money from an ATM in The Pearl area was tracked to a hotel and arrested Wednesday.

Clinton Barnes faces a charge of criminal mischief from a warrant dated to November 2016, as well as a charge of possession of a controlled substance. Other charges are pending in the case, said SAPD spokesman office Douglas Greene.

Police officers responded to a call at about 3 a.m. Wednesday on Grayson Street near The Pearl complex for a call regarding an ATM theft.

Police found evidence that someone had tried to break into the ATM, but no suspects were in the area.

Investigators received an anonymous tip that the suspect was at a nearby motel. Police found Barnes there and arrested him without incident after determining he was wanted on a warrant.

Greene said investigators believe Barnes may have broken into six or seven ATMs over several months. He said Barnes would allegedly use various instruments to break into the ATMs and steal cash from inside.
