Press Democrat photojournalist Kent Porter has been named photographer of 2016 for the western United States by the National Press Photographers Association.
The award, announced Saturday by the Athens, Georgia-based association, caps an annual contest featuring a year’s worth of work from 490 news photographers across the nation.
Porter, a 30-year veteran at The Press Democrat, was one of nine U.S. photojournalists selected for the regional honors. Out of the entire field, Porter’s work placed him among the top three award winners nationwide.
Porter’s exceptional photography last year included his coverage of both the Clayton fire and aftermath of the devastating Valley fire in Lake County, homelessness in Santa Rosa, the disastrous Dungeness crab fishing season and other breaking news, feature and sports stories.
Other entrants in the western region included photographers from the Orange County Register, Arizona Republic, Reno Gazette-Journal, San Diego Union Tribune, Ventura County Star and San Francisco Chronicle.
