Temperatures in San Antonio reached a toasty 85 degrees on Saturday, a record high for Feb. 11.
The date’s previous record was 84 degrees, set in 1922, 95 years ago, according to National Weather Service records.
As the heat cooled off in the late afternoon, dozens of visitors at Alamo Plaza emerged from the shade.
“We weren’t expecting this kind of weather in February,” said Linda DeVoe, 58, of Dallas. “This kind of took the energy out of us today.”
Bennie and Scout Olivier, a couple from Austin, were walking their Yorkshire Terrier down Travis Street when they decided to sit on a bench at Travis Park.
“We made it about two blocks out of our hotel for lunch today before we decided to just take an Uber,” said Scout Olivier, 38. “It’s a bit better now that the sun is going down.”
Despite the Saturday heat wave, residents can expect a bit of relief on Sunday, as NWS meterologist Cory Van Pelt said the weather shouldn’t be setting any more records this weekend.
The all-time February 12 record is also 84 degrees, but temperatures aren’t expected to climb past 80 degrees the rest of the weekend.
“It’ll stay pretty hot, but we’ve got a cold front coming in Sunday,” said NWS meteorologist Cory Van Pelt. “That should cool us off a bit.”
