Presidents Day 2017 is a federal holiday that will be observed on Monday, Feb. 20, 2017. It is the third federal holiday of the year, right after Martin Luther King Day. But you’ll have to wait a few months until the next federal holiday rolls around — Memorial Day falls on May 29.
President’s Day is observed each year on the third Monday in February, even though the first American president was born on February 22. It later became a day to pay tribute to Washington and 16th president, Abraham Lincoln, and more recently, a way to honor all presidents — past and present.
Here’s a closer look at events around the federal holiday:
Are stores and malls open on Presidents Day?
Yes, big box stores, shopping malls, drug stores and big name grocery stores will all open their doors so you can still do your shopping on President’s Day.
You can also catch a movie, grab a bite to eat or that bottle of wine as theaters, restaurants and liquor stores will also be open.
Are banks and the stock market open on Presidents Day?
No, all financial institutions and stock markets in the U.S. observe the day as a holiday. But don’t forget, just like on weekends and any other holiday, any transaction you do on President’s Day will be posted on the next business day.
Are schools open for Presidents Day?
Schools will be closed to observe the holiday. That includes grade, middle, high schools as well as colleges and universities across the state.
Is there mail delivery on Presidents Day? And will the post office be open?
No, all post offices will be closed on the 20th. That means you need to get to your mail post marked on Saturday to make sure you make that important deadline. Normal business hours resume on Tuesday.
What about transit?
Good question.
President’s Day may affect travel on NJ Transit. Check to see whether your bus, light rail or train service is running on a holiday or special service schedule. Holidays on NJ Transit are observed from 7 p.m. the day before the holiday to 6 a.m. on the day after the holiday.
The PATH trains will run on a Saturday schedule this year.
