Tyler Austin’s bid to unseat Greg Bird at first base during spring training is over, and the Yankees’ decision to sign Chris Carter looks prescient.
Austin fouled a ball off his left foot early this week taking batting practice during a pre-spring training workout at the minor league complex, and manager Joe Girardi said an MRI Friday found a small bone break.
Austin will be in a boot for three weeks and won’t start baseball activities for six weeks.
Carter, who tied for the National League in home runs with 41 last season, finalized a $3.5 million, one-year contract Thursday. A first baseman, the 30-year-old Carter is likely to see time at designated hitter.
Outfielder Jacoby Ellsbury will not join the team until early next week due to the pending birth of his child. Positions players are scheduled to report Saturday.
Outfielder Mason Williams has left patella inflammation and will be shut down for two weeks.
In other team news, reliever Dellin Betances and the Yankees have argued the year’s final salary arbitration case, the first for the team in nearly a decade.
Eligible for arbitration for the first time, Betances asked for $5 million. The Yankees argued during Friday’s hearing he should be paid $3 million.
A decision is expected Saturday.
Yankees guest instructor Nick Swisher says he has retired as a player.
Marlins: Multiple groups are interested in purchasing Miami, according to team president David Samson, who confirmed owner Jeffrey Loria is being considered for nomination as U.S. ambassador to France.
Dodgers: Adrian Gonzalez is taking a two-week break from hitting to heal tendinitis in the L.A. first baseman’s right elbow. Gonzalez still hopes to play for Mexico in the World Baseball Classic next month.
Rangers: Third baseman Adrian Beltre reported to spring training with a strained left calf muscle that will sideline him about three weeks and keep him out of the opening round of the World Baseball Classic.
Royals: Right-hander Peter Moylan has agreed to a minor-league contract with Kansas City and will report to major league spring training. Moylan was 2-0 with a 3.43 ERA last season with the Royals.
Astros: First baseman Marwin Gonzalez and Houston have finalized a one-year contract worth $3,725,000, a deal that avoided salary arbitration.
Rays: Reliever Tommy Hunter has agreed to a minor league contract with Tampa Bay.
Orioles: Reliever Brad Brach became the first player to beat Baltimore in salary arbitration in 22 years, ending the team’s nine-hearing winning streak. Brach was awarded $3.05 million instead of the team’s offer of $2,525,000.
Giants: Versatile infielder Aaron Hill has agreed to a minor league contract.
