The Longmont Public Safety Department is warning any businesses that trade in vehicles about a couple committing fraud in the state.

The couple has allegedly victimized dealerships in Colorado, New Mexico and Wyoming, according to a flier shared by Colorado Auto Theft Prevention Autority’s Metropolitan Auto Theft Task Force.

Longmont Cmdr. Joel Post said there have been no reports of the fraud in Longmont, but the department is sharing the information on behalf of CATPA.

The suspects are Terry Cottonwood, who also goes by the aliases Terrance Unrig or Uhrig, and Penny Robitaille, who also goes by Penny Lenzen, Lesizen or Cottonwood, the flier stated.

Their suspected method of operation includes test driving vehicles, making a deal to trade in their current vehicle, claiming they recently paid cash for the vehicle and providing paperwork showing the purchase and saying they will mail the title to the dealership when they receive it.

They reportedly make an even trade for the new vehicle, and the dealership never receives the title in the mail and they report the vehicle as stolen.

If either of the people shows up to a dealership, the task force requests someone contact Denver Police Detective Carrie Bray at 720-913-1231 or carrie.bray@denvergov.org.
