BAYONNE — City officials broke ground on a new Quick Chek on East 22nd Street Thursday afternoon — the chain’s fourth location in Bayonne — which will be part of a broad development by Alessi Development Organization.
Mayor Jimmy Davis and City Council members were joined by Quick Chek officials when they dug their shovels into the dirt in the lot at 195 East 22 St., where the 5,496-square-foot convenience store and gas station will be located.
“It’s another day for Bayonne to start moving forward,” Davis said. “We’ve been waiting for this for awhile.
“It helps this area especially… Look what the area looks like now and look at what the finished product is going to be,” he added.
The convenience store will be the fourth of its kind in Bayonne, and the second in the area with a gas station. It will be open 24 hours a day and will have both indoor and outdoor seating.

The store will also employ between 35 to 50 people, with eight management positions as well. It is expected to bring in $1 million in tax revenue annually, according to Russ Mensch, public relations officer with Mensch & Company, Inc.
“We’ve been in Bayonne close to 30 years since our first store,” said Mike Murphy, senior vice president of Quick Chek. “And I think this side of town was under-served, so I think the store will bring value here.”
The convenience store is part of an Alessi Organization development at East 21st Street and Route 440, which will eventually include an Auto Zone, a Burger King, and a proposed multi-tenant building, according to renderings provided to The Jersey Journal.
