Ontario’s police watchdog is investigating a crash in Etobicoke that sent a driver of a car with diplomatic plates and a cop to hospital.

Emergency services were called to the crash site involving three vehicles at Dundas St W. and Burmanthorpe Rd. around 3:40 p.m. Thursday.

A few minutes before the crash, Toronto police had tried to stop a vehicle driving near Bloor St. W and Islington Ave. There was an “interaction” between the officers and the occupants, and the vehicle fled, the Special Investigations Unit said in a news release Friday morning.

The fleeing vehicle hit another car, which had diplomatic license plates, at the intersection of Burmanthorpe Rd. and Dundas St. E a short time later.

Diplomatic license plates are typically used by consular or diplomatic staff based in Canada.

The male driver of the vehicle with the diplomatic plates was taken to hospital with a “serious upper body injury.” A police officer was also hurt, the SIU reported.

Two occupants of the fleeing vehicle were arrested, the SIU said.

The SIU was called in to investigate Thursday night.

The SIU said it has assigned four investigators, two forensic investigators and one collision reconstructionist to examine the crash.

The SIU looks into incidents of death, serious injury, or sexual assault during an interaction between civilians and police officers.
