A 21-month-old toddler died in an East Village apartment early Thursday morning, authorities said.
Little Reid Smith was found unconscious in his second floor apartment on East 10 Street near University Pl after his 36-year-old mother called 911 just before 9 a.m.
Baby Reid was rushed to Beth Israel Hospital, but couldn’t be saved.
His death did not initially appear to be suspicious, police sources said, but the investigation is ongoing.
“It seems like just an unfortunate incident” a law enforcement source said, adding that the parents took the baby to the hospital last year for a high fever, though it’s unclear if the tot had a history of medical issues.
According to the source, little Reid’s father was away on business when the baby died. The Smith’s also have a 4-year-old son.
