A 60-year-old woman, a regular at Coleman’s Ribs and Tips, had just picked up an order and walked out when as many as 10 shots rang out on the street in South Austin.
The woman was hit in the leg, apparently by a bullet meant for the man lying on the ground next to her. He had been hit in the abdomen and leg when the gunman opened fire in the 5700 block of West Chicago Avenue around 1:45 p.m., according to police.
"She was acting scared and I tried to talk to her," said the owner of a convenience store at the corner of Chicago and Menard Avenue. "I told her she had a bullet in her leg."
Charmaine Coleman, who manages the rib place, said she told the man to stay still so the bullet wouldn’t travel.
"It is sad," she said.
The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital, where her condition was stabilized, police said.
The man, 20, was taken in critical condition to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood where he was pronounced dead shortly after 5 p.m., according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.
The man, who has not been identified, had been talking on a cellphone when the gunman approached and fired, hitting him and the woman, police said. Officials said the man was the intended target.
Police used 13 rocks to mark shell casings on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant.

Coleman said she and her staff of five continued to work and fill orders as police canvassed the scene. Her father opened the take-out restaurant in 1980, and she said she can’t recall another shooting happening so close.
"The community needs to come together," said Coleman, 40. "It’s not just my kids, it’s all of these kids. Something has got to be done and it has to be done soon."
Earlier Thursday, a 24-year-old man was fatally shot in the Northwest Side neighborhood of Kilbourn Park, Chicago police said.
Officers responding to a call of a person shot just after 5:40 a.m. found him lying on the ground in the 4000 block of West Melrose Street, police said.
Police said the victim and a friend were walking east on Melrose when two people in a gold-colored minivan asked him about his gang affiliation. One of the people pulled out a weapon and fired, striking the man in the chest, police said.
He was identified as Maximiliano J. Arroyo of the 4200 block of West Melrose Street, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Police said they had no record of Arroyo being in a gang.

He was pronounced dead shortly before 6 a.m. at the scene.
Other shootings:
About 10:20 p.m., a 33-year-old man was shot in the West Side’s Austin neighborhood. He drove himself to West Suburban Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the leg and told investigators he was shot in the 1100 block of North Leamington Avenue. His condition was stabilized.
Shortly before 5 p.m., a 22-year-old man was shot in the 2200 block of South Kolin Avenue in the Lawndale neighborhood, police said. Police said he was walking when a vehicle pulled up, and someone fired shots. The man was struck in the lower right leg, and was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said.
No one was in custody.
