The Municipal Authority of Westmoreland County issued an alert Thursday advising customers in areas of Rostraver Township to boil their water before drinking it.

The authority said there is an increased chance it may contain disease-causing organisms.

The alert applies to customers on Route 51 and Smith, Lynn, Port Royal, West McClain and Timms roads.

The Belle Vernon Area School District announced on its Twitter page that it has cancelled school Friday because of the boil-water advisory.

The authority said it may take up to 12 hours to repair the water main.

According to the alert posted on the authority website, a break in a 16-inch water main resulted in loss of positive water pressure, which could allow contamination to enter the water system through back flow.

Customers in the affected area are advised to bring water to a rolling boil for one minute before drinking it or using it for washing dishes, brushing teeth or food preparation.
