SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – The color purple – not bluish like a concord grape, and definitely not violet – is on the Rockies’ minds this spring.
In case you haven’t noticed, the club has updated its purple to a lighter shade. The Rockies are searching for a consistent hue that will be used on everything from game jerseys, caps and T-shirts, to protective gear, alternative jerseys, jackets and hoodies.
Reaction in the clubhouse at Salt River Field has been mixed.
Right-hander Jon Gray, who has high hopes of be an ace pitching purple innings eater this season, is thrilled with the new look.

“I love it! It’s really purple, it’s unique,” Gray said. “Make it purple, not navy. Let’s go.”
Second baseman DJ LeMahieu is more skeptical.
“I don’t know …” said LeMahieu, a bit of caution in his voice. “I guess I’m still waiting to see. I guess I’m still used to the older color. I’ll give it some time, but my first reaction is not good.”
All-star right fielder Carlos Gonzalez appears to be on board. The new purple is a better match to his customized purple cleats with his No. 5 emblazoned on them.
“It is cool … it’s lighter,” he said. “When we played night games (the old jerseys) looked more like blue.”
Right-handed pitcher Chad Bettis’ response was short and sweet: “It’s purple, that’s for sure. That’s all I got.”
Veteran Ian Desmond, getting a fresh start with the Rockies as a first baseman, is all in.
“I love it, it looks great,” he said. “It’s a new year, it’s 2017, it’s a new page, a new uni.”
Rockies manager Bud Black is a fan of the new color.
“I dig it. I do. I dig the color,” Black said. “I’m on board. What I found is that with the lighting it really maintains its hue. It doesn’t change different shades.”
