BERLIN TOWNSHIP, Ohio — A Lorain man arrested on suspicion of drunken driving now faces his sixth such charge in 14 years, according to the State Highway Patrol and court records.
State troopers arrested Anthony J. Carter just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday along Ohio 2 near Berlin Heights, according to a news release from State Highway Patrol.
The Sandusky Dispatcher Center received a call about a reckless driver along that stretch of the highway. Troopers eventually located the car driven by a man later identified as Carter. He was taken into custody.
Carter refused to take a blood alcohol test, police said.
He made a court appearance Monday in Erie County court, but details about the hearing were not immediately available. Court records do not list details of his next court appearance.
Carter has five previous OVI convictions in 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2014. The 2003 and 2014 arrests were in Lorain, according to court records.
He was arrested in Elyria Township in 2004, Sheffield Village in 2006 and in Walton Hills in 2007, court records say.
He spent 30 days in jail after his 2003 conviction, court records say. In 2004 he was sentenced to 90 days in jail with 80 days suspended, court records say.
He spent another 30 days in jail for his 2006 conviction, 18 months in prison for his 2007 conviction and another 18 months in prison for his 2014 conviction, court documents say.
Carter’s license was already suspended when he was pulled over Sunday evening, police said. Court records do not say whether he’ll face additional charges of driving with a suspended license.
Carter’s name is not listed on Ohio’s Habitual Offender Registry which is required to list the names of any person convicted of five or more OVIs within a 20-year period.
