HOPATCONG — Police are warning the public after a man who posed as a public works employee to break into homes was arrested, only to be released and burglarize another home, authorities said.

Police released a photo of Jason Major, 34, of Hopatcong, in a Facebook post and asked people to call 911 if he is seen on anyone’s property.

Major was arrested on Feb. 10 in Elmwood Park and turned over to Hopatcong police, who charged him in connection with two burglaries and drug-related charges. Major was then released the next morning after a court hearing.

But Hopatcong police said Major was rearrested on Feb. 12 for allegedly committing another burglary, this time in Morris Township. He was released again and is not currently in jail.

Bail reform again takes heat from cops after alleged repeat burglar arrest

Major is accused of going to homes while wearing a tricolor safety vest and posing as a public works employee. Police said if no one was home, Major would burglarize the home.

Police said he’s accused of breaking into homes in Hopatcong, Byram, Wayne, Pompton Lakes, Elmwood Park and Morris Township.

Major has reportedly driven a 1990s green Dodge pickup with a black ladder rack, which led to his Elmwood Park arrest.
