Those aren’t droids, they’re tall construction cranes above the treeline at Disneyland. The cranes were putting up structural steel as the buildings for “Star Wars” land started taking shape in the northwest section of the theme park.
Related to that, the rock work that will line the new route for the Disneyland Railroad and the Rivers of America was getting new colors, so the rocks will not just be concrete gray when that area opens up this summer.
At the south end of the Rivers of America, the masts have returned to the Sailing Ship Columbia, and the structures that are the main stage for “Fantasmic!” are now totally visible as the construction scrims have been removed.
Winter is also refurbishment season for the Disney theme parks, with both Pirates of the Caribbean and the Matterhorn Bobsleds closed for refurbishment. Pirates is scheduled to open a few days before its 50th anniversary on March 18, 2017.
Visible evidence of the progress of the conversion of the Tower of Terror into “Guardians of the Galaxy – Mission Breakout!” can be seen in Disney California Adventure, while elsewhere in that park Mickey’s Funwheel, the Redwood Creek Challenge Trail and Grizzly River Rapids are all closed for refurbishment.
The building that once housed the House of Blues in Downtown Disney has been totally demolished and removed. A new building to house the Lickety Splitz Bowling Alley and Restaurant will soon take shape on that plot of land.
Nearby, the Curlsurf shop opened up a few days ago.
