Two Vikings cornerbacks are scheduled to be free agents next month, so the organization is doing its homework on others available.
One of those cornerbacks includes ex-Browns cornerback K’Waun Williams, a league source confirmed. However, the 25-year-old Williams might not be available for a visit to Minnesota as he’s currently in Detroit visiting the Lions with a trip to the Jets on deck.
Williams, a 2014 undrafted free agent out of Pittsburgh, manned the slot for two seasons with the Browns before he was released last summer after a reported disagreement over how injured his ankle was. Williams (5-foot-9, 183 pounds) appeared in 26 gameswith 10 starts for Cleveland. After his release, he signed with the Bears, but was let goafter failing a physical. Williams did not play in 2016.
The Vikings may likely be looking for slot cornerback help as Captain Munnerlyn is prepared to field offers in the free agent market next month. There’s also no indication if cornerback Terence Newman, the 14-year veteran also capable of defending the slot, wants to play for a 15th NFL season.
Minnesota’s third-ranked defense from last season remains set on the outsides between first-round picks Xavier Rhodes and Trae Waynes with only second-year Mackensie Alexander, Jabari Price and Marcus Sherels under contract with slot experience.
ESPN first reported the Vikings’ interest in Williams.
