Friends and family of a Kearny woman who tragically fell to her death from an escalator at the World Trade Center Oculus transit hub over the weekend are now raising thousands of dollars in her memory.

A GoFundMe page was created Monday in memory of Jenny Santos, a 29-year-old gym teachers and crew coach whose tragic death early Saturday morning made headlines in New York and beyond.

“Jenny was shy at first but once she let you into her world, you never wanted to leave it,” the page reads. “If you were loved by her, you were lucky. Her work ethic was admirable. Once she had her mind set on any goal, she didn’t stop to complete it.”

The money being raised will help her family pay her outstanding student loans. If those loans are forgiven, the funds will go to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. As of Monday evening, nearly $12,000 had been raised.

Santos graduated from Kearny High School in 2006 and was a member of the school’s rowing team. She studied physical education at William Paterson University and became an instructor at Bergen County Rowing Academy last spring.

“It’s really tragic and hard to believe,” said Clemens Reinke, a coach at the academy, told The Jersey Journal on Sunday.
