CLEVELAND, Ohio — James Mangold, who directed the upcoming X-Men spinoff “Logan,” recently addressed rumors of a Deadpool cameo and revealed that the film was to contain a scene that involved an underground mutant railroad.
Mangold explained why Deadpool won’t appear in his movie and described the deleted scene in an interview with We Got This Covered.
The “X-Men” movies and comic books revolve around an outcast, and occasionally outlaw, group of mutants who fight for their fellow outcasts and sometimes save the world.
“Logan” stars popular team member Wolverine — whose real name inspired the title — and takes place in post-X-Men future in which many mutants live in hiding.
The movie seeks a much more grounded and serious take on the X-Men mythos, and Mangold said he included a scene that revealed the existence of an underground railroad for mutants in his upcoming film.
But the scene was ultimately cut, he said.
“I played with there being an underground railroad where there were a couple of other mutants that (Logan) met on the journey.” Mangold said. “It always seemed to detract from the loneliness of the story, though and became kind of a cameo.”
In the same interview, Mangold addressed the recently quashed rumors that Deadpool — the title character from a wildly popular 2016 movie of the same name — would cameo in “Logan.”
While Deadpool is a popular character in the X-Men comics, his appearance in “Logan” would seem out of place with the film’s attempts at realism and seriousness.
Mangold told We Got This Covered that he wasn’t going to shoehorn in cameos of popular characters just to please fans.
“There was always a curiosity,” he said. “I’m so cautious of it, though, despite how much fans want it to happen. You find these moments where you’re trying to please people and write these scenes where you’ll bump into somebody, but it always seems like an awkward cameo unless you can make it fit organically and the character is integral to the story.”
Rumors of a Deadpool cameo started circulating in December, but Ryan Reynolds — who played Deadpool in the 2016 movie — quickly shot them down.
“Logan” hits theaters on March 3.
