If the feds won’t enforce drinking-water standards for some toxins, the state will adopt its own, Gov. Cuomo said Saturday.
The state asked the federal Environmental Protection Agency to regulate the amount of colorless contaminant 1,4-dioxane found in public water systems and the state would set its own limit if the feds fail to do so, in a letter that will be sent to the EPA, Cuomo announced.
“As new contaminants continue to emerge on a regular basis in communities across the nation states should no longer be left to fend for themselves,” the letter said.
The man-made carcinogen has been found in trace amounts in Long Island’s water supply.
